Major Yoga Teacher Training
(list compiled by yogasite.com and others )
There are no nationally recognized standards. So-called "certification" programs range from a weekend course to multi-year programs that are the equivalent of a college degree. In fact, there's a mini controversy within the Yoga community about the issue of national standards. Some teachers and organizations support the creation of uniform standards while others oppose them on the grounds that Yoga is so rich and diverse it would be impossible -- and destructive -- to set a single standard. That said, the Yoga Alliance, the organization at the center of the controversy, has outlined minimum training requirements that Yoga teachers must meet in order to become "registered" Yoga teachers. Registration has no national or official significance. However, the training requirements are reasonable and followed by most major training organizations.
The Following is a sample of organizations by state offering yoga teacher training programs and certification. The programs range in length from two weeks to two years and cost anywhere from hundred to thousand of dollars. Which one is right for you? It depends on your experience, knowledge and your objective. It pays to talk to people who have taken a particular program or ask local yoga teachers where they got their training and what they recommend. A good program should cover yoga philosophy and history; postures (alignment, benefits and contraindications); breathing and pranayama; meditation; anatomy and physiology; and practice teaching. A listing here does not represent an endorsement of the program.
International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT) IAYT membership is open to Yoga practitioners, Yoga teachers, Yoga therapists, health professionals utilizing Yoga in their practice, and Yoga researchers. As a member of IAYT, you will not only support your own development as a Yoga professional, but also contribute to the dissemination of Yoga as a recognized and respected therapy in the Western World.
Yoga Alliance ® registers both individual yoga teachers and yoga teacher training programs (schools) who have complied with minimum educational standards established by the organization. Our mission is to lead the yoga community, set standards, foster integrity, provide resources, and uphold the teachings of yoga. We do not claim to "represent yoga" in the United States, but do represent our registrants and support all yoga teachers, whether or not registered with our organization.
